As I was listening to Father Mike (Bible In A Year Day 110) even before he presented the homily I was thinking about how to apply this to our lives. I was already seeing the Goliath and wondering what or who is my Goliath. I was already thinking that God is leading me into battle. He is preparing me for a much greater battle.
The interesting thing was before Father Mike even started talking about the Giants in our lives, I was already there.
Interesting the battle fact is that David is unable to put on someone’s else’s battle armor. It didn’t fit. That he had to be himself. Not prepare or be as someone else
David didn’t take into battle massive pieces of armor. He took what he already knew, what he could already work with. God doesn’t ask us to be something we are not. He provides for what we need. We need to see what we have and build upon it. I don’t need more. I just need to use what I have. What is it that I have that I need to use to fight my giants?
David’s conversation with the King is about what we know. The philastine knew battle of war. David’s battle was tending sheep and defending and protecting them and doing His dads’ will. Two different types of war. (notice two different fathers-human father and God the Father).
Anyone who is going into battle must first prepare for the battle to understand what they are fighting. David had heard and seen what he was up against. He acknowledged his limitations and his strengths. He put his reliance in God.
According to the Bible, I need to put on the armor of God because I have it.
Knowing God’s design for your life – His will will make life easier. The stopping to rest is not giving up. It is about identifying our weaknesses and strengths. It about praising and thanking God for the gifts you already have. It is about seeing the beauty in the world. It is about seeing the wrongs and placing them in His hands. It is about knowing what you are meant to do and doing it and not trying to fix everyone else.
I also learned that I am not a sprinter. I am long distance runner. I am not meant to push through or plow through things. I am meant for the slower path. I am meant to take time to consider, to think, to love the space, time and beauty. That when I rush, I become stressed and overwhelmed. I need to take things in my time with God.
According to Father Mike, we need to be bold, but that doesn’t mean loud or aggressive. They are not necessarily the same. I think it can mean concise and directed.
Do the task at hand. Do not avoid doing my daily duties. Confront the battles of the day. They prepare you for giants of tomorrow. David ran to battleline because he was ready. He was battling for the name of God.
Taking everything day by day – step by step.
“In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.”
~ Isaiah 30:15
And maybe this is what it means to live… day by day.
“Day by day…”
