Choosing Words Wisely: A Call for Change

I don’t particularly care for cursing. My father used to say that there were enough words in the English dictionary that surely we could find another word which conveys what we want to express in a manner that is more gentlemanly or ladylike. He believed that language has the power to elevate a conversation and foster respect, encouraging us to think deeply about the words we choose. This philosophy influenced my perspective on communication, inspiring me to express my thoughts clearly and respectfully, even during times of frustration or disagreement. Instead of resorting to vulgarity, I strive to find alternatives that show my feelings without compromising on decorum, recognizing that the way we express ourselves often leaves a lasting impression on others.

Then there are words which drive me crazy. These words are used so much that in my opinion they are overused, to the point where their impact diminishes significantly and loses the original essence they once held. I find myself going to a thesaurus to find words that can better convey my thoughts and emotions, as I seek to express myself in a more unique way. It’s frustrating to hear the same words repeated in conversations and writing, which leads me to look for freshness in my vocabulary. This pursuit not only improves my communication but also allows me to connect with others in a meaningful manner, ensuring that my ideas resonate and leave a lasting impression.

As far as permanently banning words, I do not have any that I would like to see disappear completely; rather, I believe it would be more beneficial for certain terms to be used less often in our everyday conversations. This could lead to more thoughtful discussions and encourage us to explore a broader vocabulary. What do you think? Should we focus on promoting different expressions instead?
