Celebrate Sinterklaas Eve in Denmark!

On December 5th, Danish children eagerly await the arrival of Sinterklaas, a beloved tradition that brings joy and wonder to the holiday season. Known as “Sinterklaasaften” in Denmark, this magical evening is filled with excitement, gifts, and festive fun.

A Little History:

Sinterklaas, also known as Saint Nicholas, was a 4th-century bishop from Myra, known for his generosity and love for children. His legend spread across Europe, and he became the patron saint of sailors, merchants, and, of course, children. Fast forward a few centuries, and Sinterklaas took on a new life in the Netherlands and Belgium, eventually making his way to Denmark.

Traditions and Celebrations:

Families gather to celebrate with festive decorations, delicious treats, and heartwarming customs. Children leave out their shoes or stockings in anticipation of Sinterklaas’ visit, hoping to find them filled with small gifts and sweets the next morning. Stories of Sinterklaas’ adventures and his trusted helper, Zwarte Piet, are shared, adding to the enchantment of the evening.

Sweet Treats:

No Sinterklaas Eve is complete without indulging in traditional treats like gingerbread cookies, marzipan, and chocolate letters. These delicious goodies are enjoyed by all and make the celebration even more special.

Songs and Stories:

Families come together to sing traditional Sinterklaas songs and share stories that have been passed down through generations. The melodies and tales fill homes with warmth and nostalgia, making the night truly memorable.

Oh, come and see What I’m finding in my shoe, I received all of this from The best of Saints! A doll with braids in her hair,

A box of building blocks also for me And ice skates and a new cap, A letter van banket*. Oh, come and see
What I’m finding in my shoe, I received all of this from The best of Saints!

A Time for Giving:

Sinterklaas Eve is also a time for giving and spreading joy. Thoughtful gifts, often small and meaningful, are exchanged among loved ones. The spirit of generosity and kindness is at the heart of this cherished tradition.
