Imagine being in one of the most beautiful places on earth with views so stunning that it causes your soul sing with exhilarating joy. The views are so awe-inspiring that they leave you mesmerized. No words can convey the views found in New River Gorge. Each year the communities share their spirit with those who visit on Bridge Day. This day brings a song to the soul and exhilaration of flight.
This area of the country is steeped in the history of the German and Scots-Irish settlers. They traversed the region, experiencing the beauty held here. They worked in the coal mines and harvested timber while maintaining their historical stories and ballads, with fiddle tunes that filled the air. They talked about life in the old country and focused on family. These brought resilience, strength, and dedication to the area.
When the bridge came along in 1977, it offered new opportunities, especially since coal mining was on the decline. That bridge brought life back into the community through innovative thought and the wish to build upon what was there. The bridge hovers over the New River Gorge. In 1980, Bridge Day was first created. This festival has grown into a time where people can leap into mid-air. It is the longest steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere.
On Bridge Day, there is electricity in the air with so many faces here to explore extreme sports while diving off the bridge. You will hear the sounds of banjos and fiddles mixed with the enticing aroma of homemade barbecue and sweet apple pie. You’ll find vendors showcasing their crafts.
I don’t know if I would have the strength to go try the extreme sport, but I might be interested in all the festivities and the Bridge Walk.
