Redefining Success: Who Comes to Mind?

Daily writing prompt
When you think of the word “successful,” who’s the first person that comes to mind and why?

When I was younger, I used to think of business people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, John D. Rockefeller, etc. as successful people. They made lots of money. But as I learned about their lives and who they really are, I discovered they put their pants on the same way I do. Are they better? No. They are the same as you and me. Granted, they knew how to put things together to amass great wealth. But are they better? Or maybe I should ask, “Are they truly happy?” And I am not speaking of topical happiness; I am speaking of inner happiness, one that doesn’t inflict pain upon their fellow man. That is not a question for you or I to answer.

I have learned not to define success by someone else and what the world says success is, but by my own thoughts and being. Am I successful as great businesses define success? Most probably not. But I am, in my own way, and so are you. We all have the innate ability to achieve our own goals and strive beyond our current selves. We are all successful, and so is everyone we know. Yes, there are some of us who appear as bumbling idiots that couldn’t get out of a wet paper bag. But I assure you that they are successful in some area of their lives that we can’t see, and they may not realize it.

So who do I think of when I think of success now? It is each and every one of us who wakes up in the morning and puts a smile on someone’s face.

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
