Be Yourself: The Best Career Advice Ever

What’s the best piece of advice I ever received? It was to be myself. Many years ago, when I first began my first job out of college, I was told to be myself. I had begun a job calling on mom-and-pop stores. The person I replaced was very jovial and joked around with everyone. Everyone loved her.

After a few weeks on the job, I was told by one of my stores that I would never be able to become her and needed to be myself. They said people can see when you are trying to be something you are not, and I would never gain the respect of the store owners or others as long as I was trying to be something other than I am.

Every since then, I don’t try to a comedian. I try to be myself.
