On September 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the constitution in Philadelphia. It was convened because constituents were dissatisfied with the Articles of Confederation and the need for a strong central government. This day is now called Constitution & Citizenship Day and the September 17th – 23rd is Constitution Week. The constitution is the basis for many of our laws.
According to National Day, the purpose of the constitution is “To prevent the abuses of power they felt subjected to under the British monarchy, the Founding Fathers framed the Constitution carefully, distributing power between three branches of government. The Constitution outlines the government’s powers, the limitations on those powers, and the rights of citizens. It also outlines an amendment process for making changes in the future.”
Constitution & Citizenship Day offers a wonderful chance to appreciate the historical significance of the Constitution in American history and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Some of the responsibilities of being a citizen are:
- Uphold the principles and values outlined in the Constitution
- Vote and become involved in your civic activities
- Obey all federal, state, and local municipality laws
- Take part in jury duty when asked.
- Pay taxes
- Respect the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others
- Stay informed as to what is going on in your community and country
- Volunteer and contribute to community
