Diffusing Anger: Uncovering the Real Reasons Behind Your Frustration

Hey there, folks! You ever find yourself getting all riled up, maybe at someone or something, and you just can’t put your finger on why? I mean, you’re fuming, heart racing, but deep down, you’re scratching your head, wondering, “What’s really going on here?” That happened to me the other day. I got so angry at someone who, get this, was showing me nothing but respect and love. Crazy, right? It left me thinking, If I’m this upset, what’s actually driving it?

So, I started digging. I was listening to this beautiful novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Hallow—great app, by the way—and it hit me like a ton of bricks. The real reason I was angry wasn’t what they did. Nope. It was my pride. My ego took a little bruise, and I was lashing out because of it. That got me thinking about anger in general. What if the root of our anger isn’t what we think it is? What if it’s tied to something deeper, like one of those seven deadly sins we’ve all heard about—pride, envy, greed, you name it?

I’m no expert, but I’ve learned that anger’s like a signal, telling us something’s off inside. It’s not always about the other person or the situation. Sometimes, it’s about us—our expectations, our insecurities, or maybe something we’re holding onto that we don’t even realize. So, I put together a few questions to help you (and me!) figure out what’s really going on when anger starts bubbling up. These are meant to get you thinking, to peel back the layers and get to the heart of it.

Questions to Uncover the Root of Your Anger

  1. What’s the first thing that pops into your head when you’re angry?
Take a second to name the trigger. Is it something someone said or did? Or is it more about how it made you feel? Write it down if you can—it helps to see it clearly.
  2. Are you feeling threatened or hurt in some way?
Sometimes, anger’s a mask for feeling disrespected, ignored, or even unworthy. Ask yourself, “Is my pride, my sense of control, or my self-worth taking a hit here?”
  3. What’s the story you’re telling yourself about this situation?
We all create narratives in our heads. Maybe you’re thinking, “They’re out to get me,” or “I’m not good enough.” Is that story true, or is it fueled by something like envy or insecurity?
  4. Could one of the seven deadly sins be sneaking in?
Think about it: Pride (wanting to be right), envy (wanting what someone else has), greed (feeling entitled to more), or even sloth (avoiding hard emotional work). Any of these ringing a bell?
  5. What’s the deeper need you’re craving right now?
Anger often comes from an unmet need—love, respect, security, or maybe just a little peace. What’s missing, and how can you address it without letting anger take the wheel?
  6. What would happen if you let this go?
Imagine dropping the anger for a moment. Would you feel lighter? More vulnerable? Sometimes, holding onto anger feels safer than facing what’s underneath.
  7. How can you respond with love instead?
This one’s tough but powerful. If you take a step back and choose kindness—maybe even forgiveness—what changes? How does it feel to act from a place of peace instead of frustration?

I’ve found that asking these questions helps me slow down and get real with myself. Anger’s tricky—it feels so justified in the moment, but when you dig a little, you often find it’s hiding something else. For me, it was pride that day, but for you, it might be something different. The point is, figuring out the why behind your anger is the first step to diffusing it.

Next time you’re feeling that heat rise in your chest, take a deep breath, maybe say a quick prayer if that’s your thing, and ask yourself these questions. You might be surprised at what you uncover. And hey, if you’re like me and need a little nudge, pop on something calming like that Sacred Heart novena—it’s amazing how clarity comes when you quiet your mind.
