Father Michael J. McGivney’s life remains an inspiring example of faith in action. Born on August 12, 1852, in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Irish immigrant parents, Father McGivney grew up in a large family marked by hardships. After his father passed away, he left seminary temporarily to support his family, demonstrating a deep sense of responsibility and sacrifice. Despite these challenges, he pursued his calling and was ordained in 1877. As a parish priest in New Haven, Connecticut, Father McGivney saw firsthand the struggles faced by Catholic families, especially widows and orphans, and took action to create the Knights of Columbus.

Father McGivney was known for his compassion and his tireless commitment to serving his community. His life of service ended too soon when he passed away at the age of 38 on August 14, 1890. In recognition of his “heroic virtue,” he was declared Venerable by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 and was beatified by Pope Francis in 2020. His legacy as a beacon of charity, unity, and fraternity continues to inspire the Knights and millions around the world.
