Jose Sanchez del Rio is the patron saint of Persecuted Christians, Children, Adolescents, and Sahuayo. He lived a remarkably short life, only 14 years, yet his impact and legacy resonate deeply within the hearts of many. The socialist government of Mexico sought to stamp out religious freedom with increasing severity, targeting anyone who dared to stand against their oppressive regime. Inspired by the courageous actions of his older brother and the many others who bravely resisted tyranny, he asked his mother if he could follow in his older brother’s footsteps by joining the Cristiada movement. This movement was a vital uprising against the injustices and brutal persecution faced by Christians at the time, as they fought for their right to worship freely. Despite his passionate plea for permission, his mother did not want him to join, fearful for his safety and aware of the dangers that came with such a bold choice. Nevertheless, Jose’s unwavering faith and commitment to his beliefs ultimately defined his short, yet poignant life.
