US Navy: From Continental Roots to Modern Power

What are the responsibilities of the US Navy? US Navy created to ensure the security and defense of USA’s territorial waters and interests at sea. The Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to create the Continental Navy on October 13, 1775 during the American Revolution and afterwards disbanded..

George Washington signed the Naval Act of 1794 into law on March 27, 1794. This significant legislation, crafted by the three houses of our republic, was designed to protect American merchant ships from the notorious Barbary (Berber) pirates (Ottoman corsairs) prowling the Mediterranean and Atlantic waters. The Barbary pirates, operating off the coast of North Africa, were primarily Muslim pirates and privateers known for their raids on ships, capturing sailors and merchants, and asking for ransom. Throughout the 16th and 19th centuries, they wielded considerable political and economic influence.

From 1175 to 1861, the US Navy underwent a transformation, evolving from the original Continental Army to confronting Barbary pirates and developing ironclad warships that played a pivotal role in the Civil War. Modernization was the theme of the late 19th century as the Navy transitioned from wooden ships to robust steel-hulled, steam-powered vessels, spearheading many technological advancements. Throughout the World Wars, it dramatically expanded its capabilities by integrating aircraft carriers and pioneering advanced naval aviation tactics. In the 20th century, the US Navy developed nuclear-powered submarines and ballistic missile submarines, enhancing its strategic dominance. In the post-Cold War era and moving ahead to now, the US Navy has amplified its power by incorporating stealth technology, unmanned systems, and cutting-edge cyber warfare capabilities.
