Sailing the open seas is for me. Sailing in my long ship to conquer the seas. My ship is made of overlapping thin planks, so that when the waves are high and treacherous, my shipmates and I will not worry because my ship is meant to flex against the ocean wrath. We move through waters deep and wide, but also travel through three feet of water. Fifty men row my boat in a way that enables me to glide without being known through the ocean waters. We are mighty and strong. We will conquer it all. That is my battle cry. I am Leif Erickson, son of Erik the Red, founder of Greenland.
Leif Erickson was born in Norway around 970 A.D. When I was elementary we studied world history, we learned that before Christopher Columbus landing in the new world, he discovered it. Due to weather conditions, he was blown off course and landed in an area called Vinland, but left, never to return. There seems to be a dispute where he actually landed. His brother, also, landed in the area, but left because of fierce fighting with the natives. After his father’s death he became the chief of the settlement that his father once led.
Happy Leif Erickson Day! Celebrate your Nordic heritage!
