Psalm 23 begins with a simple but powerful image: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” It is a picture of peace, safety, and care. The shepherd leads the sheep to a place where they can rest without fear.
When was the last time you truly relaxed?
This is not meant as a trick question. Many of us move from task to task, responsibility to responsibility, rarely allowing ourselves to slow down. Even when we sit still, our minds often continue running through lists of things that need to be done. Rest becomes something we promise ourselves later, after the work is finished.
But Scripture paints a different picture. The psalmist does not say the sheep find rest on their own. The shepherd makes them lie down. In other words, rest is part of the care the shepherd provides. Without rest, the sheep would wander, grow weak, and eventually become vulnerable.
Human beings are not much different.
Rest is not laziness. It is restoration. It is the moment when the body settles, the mind clears, and the soul remembers that not everything depends on our own effort. When we pause long enough to breathe and reflect, we begin to see that God has been guiding us all along, leading us beside those quiet waters we often rush past.
Sometimes rest looks like stepping outside and enjoying the quiet of the morning. Sometimes it is prayer, silence, or simply letting the noise of the day fade for a moment. In those small pauses, we are reminded that we are not meant to carry every burden alone.
The shepherd leads. We follow. And sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is simply lie down in the green pastures He provides.
