The Call to Simplicity
Modern life tends to overwhelm us with busyness, filling our minds with constant chatter. Yet Christ Himself often retreated to places of solitude for prayer, offering us a model for simplifying our lives and reconnecting with God. In Matthew 6:6, Jesus says, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” This invitation to intimate communion with God encourages us to silence the external and internal noise that keeps us from hearing His voice.
To center our lives around the Blessed Trinity, we must first take steps to remove unnecessary distractions, creating room for grace to flow into our hearts.
Practical Steps to Remove Distractions
- Identify What Draws You Away Start by reflecting on the things that occupy your time and attention. Is it endless scrolling on social media? Overcommitting to activities? Constant multitasking? Once you’ve identified these distractions, assess whether they align with your spiritual goals.
- Set Sacred Times for Silence Dedicate moments in your day for quiet prayer or reflection. Whether it’s early in the morning or just before bed, create a sacred space where you can focus fully on God without interruptions.
- Limit Technology Our devices often pull us away from spiritual mindfulness. Consider setting boundaries, like turning off notifications during prayer or using your phone only after time spent with Scripture or the rosary.
- Embrace the Sacrament of the Present Moment The Blessed Trinity is with us at all times. Cultivate awareness of God’s presence by practicing gratitude and mindfulness throughout your day. Even mundane tasks can become acts of worship when done with love and intention.
- Turn to Nature Spend time in creation, where God’s handiwork reflects His glory. The beauty of nature often reminds us of His eternal presence and invites us to contemplate His goodness.
Praying at Set Times: Creating Rhythm in Your Day
A simple yet powerful way to remain focused on the Blessed Trinity is to establish set times for prayer throughout the day. This practice mirrors the rhythms of monastic traditions and serves as anchors that bring you back to God amidst the busyness of life:
- Morning Prayer: Begin your day with a prayer of gratitude and intention, asking for guidance and strength.
- Midday Prayer: Pause to reflect on your morning and offer any challenges or joys to God.
- Afternoon Prayer: Take a moment to surrender any worries to the Holy Spirit, asking for wisdom and peace.
- Evening Prayer: Close your day with gratitude, seeking forgiveness for any faults and expressing hope for tomorrow.
- Night Prayer: End your day by surrendering all to God, resting in His love and protection.
These intentional pauses not only deepen your connection to the Trinity but also infuse your day with moments of peace and mindfulness.
Focusing on the Blessed Trinity
Once distractions are removed, we can turn our full attention to the mystery and majesty of the Blessed Trinity. Here’s how to deepen your focus on the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
- The Father: Reflect on His role as the Creator and Champion of all life. In your prayers, thank Him for His providence and care.
- The Son: Meditate on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Read the Gospels to grow closer to His teachings and example.
- The Holy Spirit: Open your heart to the Spirit’s guidance and inspiration. Ask for wisdom and courage to live according to God’s will.
One helpful exercise is to focus on one Person of the Trinity each day of the week, dedicating time to reflect on their role in your life and in salvation history. Over time, this practice will deepen your relationship with all three Persons of the Trinity.
A Life Rooted in Love
By removing distractions and centering your life on the Blessed Trinity, you’ll discover a greater sense of peace, purpose, and joy. You’ll experience life not as a hurried race, but as a sacred journey, guided by the eternal love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The Trinity calls us to unity, both within ourselves and with others. As you focus on this divine mystery, let the harmony and love of the Trinity flow into your relationships, your work, and your prayer. In doing so, you will become a living reflection of God’s infinite goodness and grace.
Through this practice, you not only transform your own life but also grow as a witness of God’s love in the world. Let today be the day we take that first step.
Act of Divine Presence
My God,
I firmly believe that Thou art everywhere present
and seest all things,
Thou seest my nothingness,
my inconstancy, my sinfulness.
Thou seest me in all my actions;
Thou seest me in this my mediation.
I bow dow before Thee,
and worship Thy Divine majesty with my
whole being.
Cleanse my heart from all vain,
wicked, and distracting thoughts.
Enlighten my understanding,
and inflame my will,
that I may pray with reverence,
attention and devotion.
Amen.
