Nostalgic Bird Feeding: A Backyard Connection

Hey there!

You know those peaceful mornings where you sip your coffee and listen to the birds chirping while sitting on your deck? Oh, that’s my deck, and I’m not drinking coffee but tea. This just takes me back. Do you have a similar memory? Feed the Birds Day always makes me think of those simpler times when we’d just sit by the window or on the deck and watch the birds enjoying their breakfast. It’s like being the host of a fantastic breakfast party, but all the guests have feathers and their own quirky personalities!

Bird feeding has always offered me a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature. Whenever I set up a bird feeder, it feels like I’m crafting a little paradise for my feathered friends right in my backyard. Observing their vibrant feathers and energetic flutters up close is truly awe inspiring. Did you know that chickadees have the impressive ability to remember thousands of hiding spots for their food? And hummingbirds? They beat their wings about 50 times per second. Amazing, right?

Setting up a bird feeder is actually pretty simple. All you need to remember is where the birds like to be feed and what. You can go with a classic seed feeder, a suet cage, or even a nectar feeder for hummingbirds. Any choice you choose, you’re bound to create a mini paradise. Just make sure the food is fresh and suitable for the types of birds you want to attract. Sunflower seeds, peanuts, and mealworms are some great choices. Most of my birds prefer sunflower seeds and suet. But so do the squirrels. Those pesky creatures.

There’s something really nostalgic about filling up the feeder and watching the birds gather. It reminds me of those good old days when the magic of nature was our biggest entertainment. There’s a sense of peace and joy that comes from watching them, a feeling that no digital screen can replicate. It reminds of a scene in Mary Poppins.

So, this Feed the Birds Day, let’s celebrate by turning our backyards into vibrant bird sanctuaries. Embrace the beauty of nature, one bird feeder at a time, and enjoy the delightful symphony that follows. Happy bird feeding, my friend!

  1. I went through a phase when I was close to being obsessed with the birds. One day I had a front-row seat to the drama of the day – three male cardinals in the tree, with one lone (but not lonely!) female right in the middle. She seemed indecisive, like Scarlet O’Hara picking out a beau …

Suddenly I heard my daughter’s voice, like a police officer making an arrest:

“MOM, STOP! STEP. AWAY, FROM, THE WINDOW!”

(She was right, I had other things I needed to do. 😉 )

    1. I love birds. But don’t like the pesky squirrels which steal So sweet. their food. I can completely understand. I find enjoyment just watching them. Love your memory.
