McGivney, the visionary priest who founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882.

With a heart full of compassion and unwavering faith, Father McGivney embarked on a mission to solve the struggles faced by Catholic families, particularly widows and children left vulnerable by the loss of their loved ones. He saw an urgent need to unite people in faith and charity, fostering a sense of community that could give both spiritual and practical support during life’s most challenging moments.

Father McGivney’s idea was revolutionary—not just for the Catholic Church, but for society as a whole. He envisioned a fraternal organization where men could come together to grow in their faith, serve their communities, and protect their families. From this vision, the Knights of Columbus was born, rooted in the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. These core values stay the foundation of the organization today, inspiring millions of members worldwide to live lives of service and faith.

The choice of Christopher Columbus as the namesake of the Knights of Columbus was both deliberate and deeply symbolic. Columbus stands for an explorer whose faith guided him to discover new paths and possibilities, despite immense challenges. In choosing Columbus, Father McGivney paid homage to a man whose courageous journey of exploration brought Catholicism to the New World, establishing a vital cultural and spiritual bridge that connected continents.

Columbus symbolizes the hope and the potential that man can seek new horizons and bridge divides. His explorations were an act of boldness and a commitment to advancing understanding across cultures. Just as Columbus charted a course to connect disparate worlds, the Knights of Columbus seek to build bridges of compassion, understanding, and unity among people of all walks of life.

Father Michael J. McGivney’s life remains an inspiring example of faith in action. Born on August 12, 1852, in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Irish immigrant parents, Father McGivney grew up in a large family marked by hardships. After his father passed away, he left seminary temporarily to support his family, demonstrating a deep sense of responsibility and sacrifice. Despite these challenges, he pursued his calling and was ordained in 1877. As a parish priest in New Haven, Connecticut, Father McGivney saw firsthand the struggles faced by Catholic families, especially widows and orphans, and took action to create the Knights of Columbus.

Father McGivney was known for his compassion and his tireless commitment to serving his community. His life of service ended too soon when he passed away at the age of 38 on August 14, 1890. In recognition of his “heroic virtue,” he was declared Venerable by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 and was beatified by Pope Francis in 2020. His legacy as a beacon of charity, unity, and fraternity continues to inspire the Knights and millions around the world.

At the heart of the Knights of Columbus is the grace that flows through their commitment to God and one another. This grace manifests in many ways:

The Grace of Charity: Acts of kindness and generosity become powerful expressions of God’s love. By giving selflessly, members embody the Gospel message and bring hope to those who are struggling.

The Grace of Unity: Strength is found in coming together with shared purpose and faith. Through unity, the Knights build a community where everyone feels valued and supported.

The Grace of Fraternity: Relationships formed within the Knights of Columbus are more than friendships—they are bonds of brotherhood rooted in mutual respect and shared values. This fraternity creates a sense of belonging that is deeply fulfilling.

The Grace of Patriotism: Love for one’s country and dedication to its principles are integral to the Knights’ identity. They celebrate the freedoms that allow them to practice their faith and serve their communities.

On this Founders Day, we not only honor Father McGivney’s remarkable legacy but also celebrate the countless lives touched and transformed by the Knights of Columbus. His vision has flourished beyond his lifetime, growing into a global force for good that continues to reflect the beauty of these graces. From the smallest acts of kindness to large-scale initiatives, the Knights exemplify the transformative power of faith in action. As we mark this special day, let us be inspired by the example of Father McGivney and the Knights of Columbus.

May their dedication to service, faith, and fraternity encourage us all to live with purpose, generosity, and compassion. Here’s to celebrating not just the past, but the enduring spirit of hope and love that will guide the Knights of Columbus into the future.

Happy Founders Day to everyone who upholds the mission and values of Father Michael J.
