Before 1892, there was no widely recognized pledge. It began with Captain George T. Balch’s version in 1885, which was intended to teach patriotism to children in schools. His pledge read: “We give our heads and our hearts to God and our country; one country, one language, one flag!”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pledge we are familiar with today was written in 1892. It was originally composed for a school program to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival in the Americas.
