Uncle Sam Day happens every year on September 13th in the United States. But have you ever wondered about the origins of this iconic figure? Do you believe he has been around since the inception of the United States, or was he actually George Washington’s uncle? It’s time to dig deeper into this enigmatic character and unravel the truth behind his legacy. This is the story<\/a> I first heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you think it has anything to do with our beginnings, you’d be way off the mark. Nope, it’s all about the infamous war of 1812, believe it or not. So the story goes like this: Samuel Wilson, a guy from New Hampshire, sets off for Troy, New York in search of some better luck. Next thing you know, he’s ended up working in a meat packing plant. Now, how on earth does that tie in with the war of 1812 or good ol’ Uncle Sam, you wonder?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see, they had to get the meat to the front lines. That’s when Elbert Anderson, a government contractor, and Samuel Wilson worked together to get large quantities of meat as well as other commodities to the front line. Really, that still doesn’t explain how or where we got Uncle Sam you ask?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, allow me to regale you with the fascinating account of Samuel Wilson, who looked like the first Uncle Sam, confidently marking “US” on the meat barrels. Indeed, news quickly spread among the soldiers that he was the one ensuring their provisions. In a playful jest, they nicknamed the meat “Uncle Sam’s beef.” From that moment on, throughout the war of 1812, the United States Government was affectionately referred to as Uncle Sam. Such a remarkable and enthralling piece of history! There are even rumors of Uncle Sam’s presence before the War of 1812.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, Uncle Sam has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving into the iconic figure we recognize today. So we not only see him today. But it never fails – he is out and about on July 4th, Our Nation’s Birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
