Today is the birthday of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was born on October 24, 1632, in Delft, in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He sold cloth for a living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No university. No fancy title. No laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What he had was a tiny piece of glass and a great deal of patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the cloth trade, buyers used a small magnifying glass to count the threads and judge how good the cloth was. Antonie wondered how much more a lens could show. So he taught himself to make his own. He ground and polished little bits of glass, each one smaller than a pea, and set them in small metal frames. One visitor reported that his lenses were clearer than anyone else’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he started looking at everything he could fit in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the summer of 1674, he looked at a drop of water from a lake near Delft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was just water. And it was full of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tiny creatures were swimming all through it. He called them his “little animals.” In Dutch, kleijne diertgens<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Think about that. People had looked at water for thousands of years. It looked like water. Then one man simply looked closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He even tried to count them. His guess was about 2,730,000 in a single drop. I can’t picture that many. But I love that he tried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In October of 1676, he sent a long letter about it all to the Royal Society in London. These were learned gentlemen, and they had a hard time believing a cloth seller from Holland. It took them three tries to see the little animals for themselves. One report says they laughed at the stories at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then they looked. And then they believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is the part I like best. Not that he turned out to be right. It is that he kept looking while other people chuckled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He kept at it for the rest of his long life. He lived to be 90.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So here is a gentle thought for a Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don’t need a degree to notice something wonderful. You need a window, a little time, and a willingness to look twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where could you look closer today? The tea in your cup. A leaf in the yard. A face you see every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Small things were never small to him.
