Ernest Hemingway was born on this day in 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, just outside Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He would grow into one of the most recognizable writers of the twentieth century. His personal life was complicated, often troubled, and filled with contradictions. Yet within that larger story, there is one simple habit of his that remains useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the words would not come, Hemingway began with one true sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In A Moveable Feast<\/em>, he describes sitting at his desk in Paris, unable to write. Rather than forcing an impressive opening or waiting for inspiration to arrive, he reminded himself to write the truest sentence he knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might be something he had observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might be something someone had said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might be a plain fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is often not that we have nothing to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is that we are reaching for something impressive instead of something true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impressive version may not exist yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The true sentence usually does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do not understand what happened.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I need help.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This matters to me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been avoiding this because I am afraid of getting it wrong.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am tired, but I still want to begin.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of those sentences solves the whole problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But each one creates a beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A true sentence gives us a place to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is what makes Hemingway\u2019s habit so practical. It reduces a large and intimidating task to one manageable act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to write the entire letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only have to write the first honest sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to know how the conversation will end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only have to say what is true at the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to fill a journal page with wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only have to write what is real today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can be especially helpful for anyone who keeps a journal, whether in a notebook, a planner, or a few lines typed into a phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are days when the page feels too empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On those days, there is no need to write something profound or memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Begin with one true sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then see what follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hemingway\u2019s iceberg theory reflects a similar principle. He believed that most of a story\u2019s weight could remain beneath the surface, unspoken, as long as the writer truly understood what was there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journal page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difficult conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unfinished project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not begin with the version that sounds impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Begin with the sentence that is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest, more often than not, begins to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
