Holy Thursday \u2013 The Night That Changed Everything<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Imagine you\u2019re one of Jesus\u2019 closest followers on that first Holy Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a few days earlier, you watched Jesus ride into Jerusalem on a donkey while people shouted \u201cHosanna!\u201d and threw their coats and palm branches on the road. It felt like the whole city was buzzing with excitement. Passover was here\u2014the biggest holiday of the year. Families were everywhere, picking out their lambs, baking flat bread without yeast, and getting ready for the special meal that reminded them how God rescued their ancestors from Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The air smelled like roasted lamb and herbs. Roman soldiers were watching from the walls because big crowds always made them nervous. Pilate had even come up from the coast to keep things under control. You could feel the tension mixed with the joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus told a couple of you to go into the city and follow a man carrying a water jar. That was unusual\u2014men didn\u2019t usually carry water jars. But you did what He said, and sure enough, it led you up some stairs to a big upper room all set up and ready. You and the other disciples walked in, dusty from the streets, and got comfortable on the low cushions around the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You didn\u2019t sit in chairs like we do today. You reclined on your left side, eating with your right hand. That was how free people ate back then. Slaves had to stand and eat fast. On this night, just leaning back like that reminded everyone: God set us free once, and something even bigger was about to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus took the main spot at the table. John sat right next to Him, close enough to lean over and talk quietly. Judas ended up in the seat right beside Jesus too\u2014the place of honor. You didn\u2019t think much about it at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the meal started, just like every Passover you\u2019d known since you were a kid. But suddenly Jesus stood up, took off His outer robe, and tied a towel around His waist like the lowliest servant. He poured water into a bowl and started washing your feet\u2014one by one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could hear the water splashing. You felt His hands on your tired, dirty feet. Nobody said a word at first. When He got to Peter, Peter blurted out, \u201cLord, You\u2019re washing my<\/em> feet?\u201d Jesus answered gently, \u201cIf I don\u2019t wash you, you can\u2019t be part of Me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It hit you hard. Your Teacher, your King, was doing the work of a slave. He was showing you what real greatness looks like\u2014not bossing people around, but serving them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After He finished and sat back down, He picked up the bread. He gave thanks, broke it, and said, \u201cTake and eat. This is My body, given for you. Do this to remember Me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You took your piece and chewed it slowly. It was the same flat Passover bread you\u2019d eaten every year, but this time it felt different. Like He was saying He<\/em> was the true bread, the one who would be broken for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later He picked up the cup of wine\u2014the one that stood for God\u2019s promise to redeem His people. He said, \u201cThis cup is the new covenant in My blood, poured out for you.\u201d You drank it, and the taste stayed with you. You didn\u2019t fully understand it yet, but you knew something huge was happening. The old story of Passover was being made new right in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Jesus dipped a piece of bread in the sweet mixture on the table and handed it straight to Judas. That was a sign of friendship and honor. Even knowing what was coming, Jesus gave him that last gentle offer. Judas took it and slipped out into the night. The room felt heavier after he left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You finished the meal and sang the old Passover songs together\u2014the Hallel psalms. Jesus sang them too, knowing He was about to live them out. Then you all stepped out into the cool night. The full moon was shining bright, lighting the way as you walked with Him toward the Mount of Olives and the garden called Gethsemane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You didn\u2019t get the whole picture that night. None of you did. You just saw your Lord washing feet, breaking bread, sharing the cup, and walking calmly toward what was coming. Only later\u2014after the cross and the empty tomb\u2014did it all start to make sense. Jesus wasn\u2019t just remembering the old deliverance from Egypt. He was<\/em> the Passover Lamb. He was giving Himself so we could be truly free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is Holy Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a moment right now and picture yourself in that room. Feel the dust on your feet. Hear the water in the basin. Taste the bread and the wine. Sit with the shock of seeing Jesus serve like a servant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
