Before John ever cries out in the wilderness,
before camel\u2019s hair and riverbanks and repentance,
before the voice that will one day shake Israel\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John listens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not speak.
He does not preach.
He does not explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recognizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luke tells us something remarkable, almost easy to miss if we read too quickly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cWhen Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the child leaped in her womb.\u201d<\/em>
Luke 1:41<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

John\u2019s first testimony is not given with words.
It is given with joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Witness Before a Voice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

John\u2019s role in salvation history is often summarized by what he will later say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cA voice of one crying out in the wilderness.\u201d<\/em>
Isaiah 40:3; Luke 3:4<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But Scripture shows us that before John becomes a voice, he is a witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before he calls others to repentance,
before he points to the Lamb of God,
before he dares to say \u201cHe must increase; I must decrease\u201d<\/em> (John 3:30),<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John responds to Christ\u2019s presence in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first movement of his life is not speech.
It is recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Filled With the Spirit Before Understanding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The angel Gabriel tells Zechariah something extraordinary about his son:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cHe will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother\u2019s womb.\u201d<\/em>
Luke 1:15<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John does not leap because he understands who Christ is.
He leaps because the Spirit within him recognizes the Spirit drawing near.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not learned faith.
It is received faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John\u2019s life teaches us that God\u2019s work often begins before comprehension<\/strong>, before language, before conscious choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grace moves first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joy as Testimony<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Luke does not describe the leap as random movement.
Elizabeth names it for us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe child in my womb leaped for joy.\u201d<\/em>
Luke 1:44<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Joy becomes John\u2019s first testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not fear.
Not analysis.
Not explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before there is doctrine,
before there is mission,
before there is a call to prepare the way,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

there is joy at the nearness of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John\u2019s body responds before his voice ever will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set Apart in Hiddenness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Scripture often tells us that God sets His servants apart long before the world notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeremiah hears God say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cBefore I formed you in the womb I knew you.\u201d<\/em>
Jeremiah 1:5<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Isaiah echoes it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe Lord called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name.\u201d<\/em>
Isaiah 49:1<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

John belongs to this pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is consecrated in hiddenness.
Formed in silence.
Prepared in a place no one can see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wilderness will come later.
The crowds will come later.
The martyrdom will come later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, John\u2019s work is simply to recognize Christ\u2019s presence and rejoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognition Before Proclamation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a deep wisdom here for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We often believe faith begins when we can explain what God is doing.
John\u2019s life tells a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith often begins when we recognize God is near \u2014
even if we do not yet know what to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John recognizes Christ before he can point Him out.
He rejoices before he can preach.
He responds before he can understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that order matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Quiet Preparation for a Loud Mission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

John\u2019s future will be bold.
His words will be sharp.
His call to repentance will unsettle kings and crowds alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But his beginning is gentle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A leap.
A movement.
A joy no one sees except his mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is how God prepares a forerunner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not by noise.
Not by haste.
But by deep, interior recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Invitation for Advent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

John\u2019s first witness invites us to ask a quiet question this Advent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do we allow ourselves to recognize Christ before we try to explain Him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do we give joy permission to rise before understanding?
Do we let the Spirit stir recognition before we find the words?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advent is not only about waiting for Christ to come.
It is about learning to notice when He is already near.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John teaches us that the truest preparation sometimes happens without words at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
