A loop of small beads. A little cross at the end.

Maybe it was your grandmother’s or your mother’s. Maybe it sits in a drawer, hangs from a car mirror, or lives in a coat pocket, worn smooth from years of prayer.

Today is October 7, the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. A memorial is a day the Church sets aside to honor a saint and remember God’s work in that person’s life. Today we honor Mary, the mother of Jesus, under a title that reminds us of this familiar prayer.

Here is how the Rosary works. You hold one bead at a time. Most of the prayers are Hail Marys, which begin with the words the angel Gabriel spoke to Mary: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” (Luke 1:28, RSV-2CE).

Ten Hail Marys make a decade. Before each decade, you pray an Our Father. After it, a Glory Be. And while your fingers move, your mind rests on a moment in the life of Jesus and Mary. His birth. His cross. His rising.

These moments are called mysteries—events we return to in prayer, allowing their meaning to deepen.

Same words. Again and again.

Does that sound dull? Maybe. But think of a mother singing the same lullaby every night. Think of saying “I love you” to someone you have said it to a thousand times. We do not repeat those words because we ran out of new ones. We repeat them because we mean them.

The beads give the hands something to do. Then the heart can settle. One bead. Then the next. No hurry.

You may still get distracted. You may remember an unfinished chore or find yourself worrying about someone you love. Gently return to the mystery. Bring that person or that worry into your prayer.

Now for a little history, because this date has a story.

On October 7, 1571, the fleet of the Holy League met an Ottoman fleet in a sea battle near Lepanto, off the coast of Greece. Pope Pius V had asked the faithful to pray the Rosary for the fleet.

The Holy League won.

Pope Pius V attributed the victory to Mary’s intercession and established a celebration called Our Lady of Victory. His successor, Pope Gregory XIII, changed its title to honor the Holy Rosary. The observance eventually extended to the whole Church, and October 7 became its fixed date in 1913. www.vaticannews.va

That history belongs to the memorial. But when we pick up a rosary today, we also enter something personal: the ordinary habit of turning to God in prayer.

As we pray each bead, we turn our attention toward Christ. The prayer turns our attention toward Christ. With Mary, we remember what He has done and bring Him the needs we carry.

You do not need a special place or a perfectly quiet mind.

If you have a rosary, hold it today. If you do not, use your fingers to count. Begin with one decade. Choose a mystery—perhaps the birth of Jesus—and spend a few minutes praying and reflecting on it.

An Our Father. Ten Hail Marys. A Glory Be.

You might pray for someone who is sick, someone who has died, or someone who has drifted from the faith. You might simply ask God to help you through the day.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

One bead at a time. That is how most good things get done.

Prayer Notes and References

About the Rosary: The Rosary joins spoken prayer with meditation on the mysteries of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, together with Mary. Its familiar form developed gradually through the Church’s prayer tradition. See the Catechism of the Catholic Church, §§2678 and 2708.

The decades and mysteries: With the Luminous Mysteries proposed by Saint John Paul II in 2002, the complete Rosary includes twenty decades arranged in four sets of five mysteries: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. Each decade includes one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and one Glory Be. Most often, we pray one set of five decades at a time. www.usccb.org

About the Our Father: Also called the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father is the prayer Jesus taught His disciples. It is recorded in Matthew 6:9–13 and, in a shorter form, Luke 11:2–4. The traditional Catholic wording follows Matthew’s account.

The Hail Mary’s origins: Its opening comes from Gabriel’s greeting (Luke 1:28) and Elizabeth’s blessing (Luke 1:42). The closing petition asking Mary to pray for us sinners developed through the Church’s medieval prayer tradition. The complete prayer received official recognition in the Roman Breviary in 1568. www.newadvent.org

About the Glory Be: Also called the Gloria Patri or the Lesser Doxology, the Glory Be praises the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Its wording developed in the early Church. Matthew 28:19 names the three divine Persons, while Revelation 4:8 expresses the unending praise of God.

About the Hail Holy Queen: Also known by its Latin title, Salve Regina, this traditional Marian prayer asks Mary, Mother of Mercy, to intercede for us and lead us to Jesus. It is commonly prayed at the end of the Rosary and is also used in the Liturgy of the Hours.

Further reading: How to Pray the Rosary — USCCB · Catechism of the Catholic Church

Today the Church remembers Our Lady of the Rosary.
