William Lassell made beer.

That was his work. He was a brewer in Liverpool, England, and he did it well enough to make a good living.

But William also liked to look up.

So he built himself a telescope. Then he built a bigger one. He ground the big mirrors by hand, slowly, over and over, until they were smooth enough to catch starlight. He even designed his own machine to help with the polishing.

Nobody handed him a title. Nobody asked him to do it. He just loved the sky.

Then came the autumn of 1846.

On September 23, astronomers in Berlin found a brand new planet. It was Neptune, far out at the edge of what people knew. The whole world of stargazers was buzzing.

William heard the news and did what he loved. He pointed his big telescope at it.

He looked at Neptune on October 2. Then he kept looking, night after night. And on October 10, 1846, he spotted a tiny point of light beside the planet. It was a moon. We call it Triton.

That is seventeen days after Neptune was found. Seventeen days.

Think about that for a moment. A man who brewed beer for a living found a moon at the edge of the solar system, and he did it with a telescope he made with his own hands.

Here is what I love about this story.

He did not wait to be an expert. He did not wait for a perfect moment. He kept up his ordinary work, and he kept his eyes open.

Maybe you know that feeling. The dishes. The emails. The errands. The same road to the same place. Most of life is ordinary work.

But there is always a small window left open. A little time at the end of the day. A quiet minute outside. A project you love, just because you love it.

That window is where wonder gets in.

The Bible says it so simply. “When I look at thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast established” (Psalm 8:3). The psalmist looked up too, long before any telescope.

Today is Saturday, the day the Church traditionally remembers Mary. The Gospel today says, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (Luke 11:28). Mary lived a quiet life of daily work, and she kept her heart open. Hearing, noticing, keeping. That is a good way to look at the sky, too.

Today is also World Mental Health Day. If your mind feels crowded, here is a small gift. Step outside. Look up. You do not need a telescope. The sky is bigger than your to-do list, and it is always there.

Triton is still out there, by the way. It is the largest moon of Neptune, circling the planet the whole time you read this. William never saw it up close. He only saw a faint spark. But he saw it, and that was enough.

So go ahead and do your ordinary work today.

And then, if you can, look up.

What is one small thing you could look up at tonight?
