This one is old, hard-sided, with metal latches that click instead of zip. It lived under my mother’s bed for as long as I can remember, pulled out only on certain days, almost ceremonially.

Inside, there was nothing the world would call valuable. Soft-edged photographs. A recipe card written in looping cursive that feels like a language from another time. A church bulletin from a wedding long past. A ribbon. A button jar. The kinds of things you’d toss out in minutes if you didn’t know whose hands touched them first.

For a long time, I thought grandparents passed things down in grand gestures—rings, blessings, stories told once at the perfect moment. But now I think the real inheritance comes quietly.

In the way someone hums while they work. In the way cornbread and buttermilk become a ritual because someone believed it soothed a tender stomach. In the phrases repeated so often you don’t realize you’ve absorbed them until they slip out of your own mouth years later.

No one announces, "I am now giving you my values." It happens while you watch someone fold a towel a certain way, bow their head before a meal, or answer the phone with patient consistency.

That old suitcase didn’t hold treasure. It held evidence—proof of a life lived with attention, saved simply because no one could bear to throw it away.

If your grandparents are still here, today is a beautiful day to ask them something small. Not the biography questions—the human ones. What did your kitchen smell like on Sundays? What did you carry in your pockets? What habit of your mother’s did you keep without meaning to?

And if they’re gone, today is a good day to open your own suitcase—your recipe box, your drawer of loose photographs, your button jar.

You might be surprised by what’s still teaching you.

I keep a cedar hope chest now, the way some families keep quilts or workboxes passed down through generations.
