They point. They comment. They explain. They replay the moment again and again. They say they are standing for truth, and sometimes they are. They say they are glad justice is being done, and sometimes justice does need to be done.

But even when something wrong is being corrected, there is still a danger.

We can begin to enjoy the fall.

That is the part that troubles me.

Not the truth coming out. Truth matters.

Not accountability. Accountability matters too.

Not correction. Sometimes correction is necessary.

But the spirit around it can become strange. It can shift from sorrow to satisfaction. From clarity to cruelty. From justice to entertainment.

And I do not want to be part of that.

I think this is one of the places where the lantern has to be carried very low.

Because there is a fine line between being grateful that truth has come into the light and gloating because someone else has been exposed.

One is sober.

The other is dangerous.

We can be right about the wrong and still wrong in how we respond to it.

That sentence is hard, but I think it is true.

Sometimes people who are trying to stand for what is good can still begin to sound harsh. Sometimes people who are trying to defend truth can begin to rejoice in another person’s humiliation. Sometimes people who are trying to name evil can let anger become the loudest thing in the room.

And when that happens, something in the heart can bend.

The explosion becomes a spectacle.

The correction becomes a performance.

The wound becomes something to watch.

That is not the same as healing.

The world is very good at turning everything into a crowd.

A mistake becomes a headline.

A sin becomes a talking point.

A downfall becomes content.

And before long, we are not only asking what happened. We are watching to see who will fall next.

That is not discernment.

That is appetite.

I do not say that lightly. I say it because I can feel the pull of it too.

There are times when something happens and part of me wants to react quickly. Part of me wants to say, “See? That was wrong.” Part of me wants to join the chorus because the chorus feels powerful for a moment.

But power is not always wisdom.

And being right is not the same as being holy.

That may be why Scripture warns us not to rejoice when an enemy falls. It knows something about the human heart. It knows how quickly justice can become pride. It knows how easily correction can become contempt.

When wrong is uncovered, the Christian response should not be gloating.

It should be sobriety.

Because if something wrong has happened, then something has already been damaged.

Someone was hurt.

Someone was deceived.

Someone wandered.

Someone chose badly.

Someone may need to be protected.

Something true may need to be restored.

That is not a carnival.

That is a place for humility.

The Lantern Practice does not ask us to ignore evil. It does not ask us to pretend wrong is not wrong. It does not ask us to cover up what needs to be brought into the light.

But it does ask us to notice our own hearts while the light is shining.

Am I seeking truth?

Or am I enjoying the exposure?

Am I praying for repair?

Or am I feeding on the explosion?

Am I asking what can be healed?

Or am I glad someone else looks worse than I do?

Those questions are uncomfortable, but they may be necessary.

Because gloating can hide under good words.

It can hide under “justice.”

It can hide under “truth.”

It can hide under “I am just saying.”

It can hide under “They deserved it.”

And maybe sometimes consequences are deserved. But even then, the condition of our own heart still matters.

The fall of another person should not become food for our pride.

That does not mean we excuse wrong.

It means we refuse to let someone else’s wrong make us cruel.

There is a difference between a lamp and a spotlight.

A spotlight can expose.

A lamp can guide.

A spotlight can make a spectacle.

A lamp can help us see where to step.

The Lantern Practice is not about standing above the wreckage with a spotlight in our hand. It is about kneeling low enough to ask what truth, mercy, and repair may require of us.

Sometimes truth coming into the light is painful.

Sometimes it should be painful.

But pain should make us careful, not entertained.

If a bandage is finally being lifted, we do not gather around to cheer at the wound. We ask how it can be cleaned. We ask what needs to be protected. We ask what will help it heal.

Maybe that is the difference.

The world often asks, “Who can we expose?”

Faith asks, “What can God redeem?”

The world often asks, “Who was wrong?”

Faith also asks, “What is my own heart doing right now?”

The world often wants the explosion to keep burning.

Faith looks for the first small act of repair.

That is not always easy.

Sometimes the wrong is serious. Sometimes the truth needed to come out. Sometimes people must be held accountable. Sometimes protection, justice, and boundaries are necessary.

But even then, we can refuse to gloat.

We can tell the truth without delighting in shame.

We can support correction without feeding contempt.

We can be grateful for light without turning the wound into a show.

Maybe this is one of the quiet disciplines of our time.

To see clearly without becoming hard.

To name wrong without losing mercy.

To want truth without wanting destruction.

To let justice make us sober, not smug.

That may be enough for today.

When something wrong is exposed, pause before joining the crowd.

Carry the lantern lower.

Look at the explosion, but do not feed on it.

Ask what truth requires.

Ask what mercy protects.

Ask what repair may still be possible.

And may God bless us with hearts that do not rejoice in another person’s fall, but seek the light that leads us all home.

When something wrong is exposed, it is easy to gather around the explosion and mistake gloating for justice.
