His first response was not to keep the news to himself. He didn’t go find his mother, his father, or another sibling. He went looking for his brother.

Simon.

I wonder what those first hours with Jesus must have been like. Whatever Andrew experienced compelled him to find Peter first.

Then Andrew brought Simon to Jesus.

Before Peter had a chance to speak a single word…

Jesus looked at him and said,

“You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas.” Not a pebble, not a stone.

Rock.

Jesus renamed Simon the moment they met.

Why?

Why would Jesus give an ordinary Galilean fisherman such a name before Simon had followed Him, witnessed a miracle, or done anything remarkable?

That question stays with me. And I believe the answer tells us as much about Jesus as it does about Peter.

Think about how we use names. Your first name is personal. When someone remembers it, uses it, it is a small honor. And nicknames go deeper still. We don’t give nicknames to strangers. We give them to people we know well — people whose personality we have watched up close. A nickname is earned intimacy.

That is what makes this moment so strange.

Jesus gives Simon the intimate name first. At first sight. He names him the way a lifelong friend would, except they met moments ago.

Put yourself in Simon’s place. Your brother drags you across town, breathless about a rabbi. And before you can open your mouth, a stranger looks at you… really looks at you….and tells you your name, your father’s name, and then tells you who you are going to be.

Not asks. Tells.

I have to be honest. If someone called me something I didn’t believe I was, I would be confused. Maybe even upset. A compliment you can’t believe about yourself doesn’t feel like a compliment. It feels like being mistaken for someone else. Or worse, like an expectation you already know you will fail.

And Simon knew himself. He had lived his whole life inside his own skin. Whatever he was, he knew that “rock” was a lot to carry.

There is something else Simon would have known, something every Galilean raised on the Scriptures would have felt in that moment.

In the Scriptures, people do not rename people. God does.

God renamed Abram to Abraham, “father of a multitude”, when Abraham was a childless old man. God renamed Jacob to Israel after a night of wrestling. And every time, the pattern is the same: the new name announces the mission, not the resume. The name comes first. The reality follows, because God’s word makes it so.

More than that in the Scriptures Simon grew up hearing, Rock belonged to God alone. “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress.” No one in the Old Testament carries that name. It was God’s title.

And now a rabbi from Nazareth takes that word and lays it on a fisherman.

Somewhere underneath Simon’s confusion, a more dangerous question must have flickered: Who does this man think He is?

Here is what fascinates me most.

If you asked the other disciples which of them was steady, solid, unmoved, slow to change, Simon is not the name they would have given you.

Peter speaks before he thinks. He steps out of the boat in faith and sinks in doubt within the same minute. He swears he will die with Jesus and denies Him three times before sunrise. The man named Rock spends most of the Gospels behaving like sand.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped saying “I will never.” Every time I said it, life tested it, and I lost. I have found it is easier to simply Trust in the Lord than to trust in my own resolve.

Peter had to learn that like I am still learning it. “Even if all fall away, I never will.” That is a man trying to be the rock on his own strength.

Every attempt collapsed. Every “I will never” ended in the courtyard, by the fire, weeping bitterly at the sound of a rooster.

Because the name was never a standard for Peter to reach.

It was a promise Jesus intended to keep.

Jesus did not name what Simon was. He named what He would make of him. “He himself knew what was in man” John tells us this just one chapter after the renaming. Jesus saw past the impulsiveness, past the big talk, past the denials that hadn’t happened yet, all the way to a morning on another shore of that same lake, where He would ask a broken fisherman three times, “Do you love me?” once for each denial and hand him back his calling.

And He saw further still. To Pentecost, where this same man would stand before the crowds without moving. To the day, tradition tells us, when Peter would face his own cross and ask to be hung upside down, feeling unworthy to die as his Lord did.

The name was true the whole time. It just wasn’t finished yet.

That is what this moment tells us about Jesus. He does not name what is. He names what He will make. And His word about a person is more durable than their worst night. Peter carried the name Rock through every failure, and Jesus never took it back.

And that is what it tells us about Peter. He is not the apostle we love because he was strong. He is the apostle we love because he wasn’t and the name held anyway.

I wonder if that is why this question stays with me.

Because every one of us has been called something by God we do not yet believe about ourselves. Beloved. Forgiven. His.

And our honest reaction is often Simon’s: confusion. Resistance. That’s not me.

Peter’s story says the name is true anyway.

Not because of who we are.

Because of who spoke it.

References & Notes

For those who want to go deeper, these sources shaped this reflection.

Scripture
Genesis 17:1–8 · Genesis 32:22–32 · Psalm 18:2 · Isaiah 51:1–2 · Matthew 14:22–33 · Matthew 16:13–23 · Matthew 26:31–35, 69–75 · John 1:35–42 · John 2:24–25 · John 21:15–19 · Acts 2:14–41.

Early Christian Tradition
Eusebius of Caesarea, Ecclesiastical History, Book III, chapter 1 — the tradition of Peter’s crucifixion.

A Note on the Reflection
The meaning I draw from Peter’s name is a meditation on his calling and growth.

Previous Post in the Series

The First One Called

The Fishermen of the Sea of Galilee

Peter: The Man Jesus Called Rock

Thinking Like God

Peter the Man Jesus Called Rock

Jesus looked at a fisherman he’d just met and gave him a name that belonged to God alone.
