Does anybody have a king?”

The room dissolved into laughter, the kind of easy, overlapping noise that only fills a house well-lived in. Sitting near the edge of the commotion was a friend one of the older boys had brought home. He had been quiet most of the evening, eyes moving back and forth, absorbing the effortless banter of a family comfortable in its own skin. You could almost see him deciding whether to belong to it, just a little.

He leaned forward, looking across the table at Mrs. Kelly. “I can’t believe you were ever a kid.”

The table erupted again.

“Oh, I was,” she said, her eyes crinkling at the corners.

“I bet you got into trouble, though.”

“Not nearly as much as their father,” she shot back without missing a beat.

“No way!” one of the boys protested.

Mrs. Kelly smiled, and for just a second, something crossed her face. Not quite a memory, more like the doorway to one. “You should have seen me when I was your age.”

The visiting boy shook his head, taking in her neatly combed hair, her steady maternal posture, the way she seemed to belong exactly where she was. “I just can’t picture it.”

Her daughter paused, a card still hanging mid-air. “Mom… do you have any old pictures around here?”

Mrs. Kelly thought for a moment. “Actually… I do.”

“Can we see them?”

She looked around at the eager faces, and the card game quietly let go of itself, the way good things sometimes do when something better arrives.

“You know… that might be fun.” She pushed her chair back and stood. “Your grandmother saved just about everything. When she passed, I packed most of her old photographs into a suitcase and brought it up to the attic.” She smiled to herself. “I haven’t opened it in years.”

“A real suitcase?” the youngest asked.

“A very old one. Leather and brass clasps. It even has a broken handle she always meant to fix.”

“Can we go get it?”

Mrs. Kelly looked around the table. The cards lay where they had fallen. The visiting boy was leaning forward on both elbows now, as though he had forgotten he was a guest. She let herself have the moment.

“Of course,” she said. “But if we’re dragging out the past, everybody helps put things back in order when we’re done.” She started toward the hallway, then stopped and looked back over her shoulder. “And you have to let me tell you the stories that go with them.”

By the time Mrs. Kelly came back downstairs, the card game had quietly surrendered, the deck resting in a crooked pile at the center of the table. She carried the suitcase with both hands, holding it like something fragile.

It was smaller than the children had imagined, covered in worn brown leather stretched over a heavy wooden frame. The brass clasps had long since lost their shine, and one side of the handle had been wrapped with a piece of old twine where it had broken years before.

“You weren’t kidding,” one of the boys said, leaning closer. “That thing is ancient.”

“So am I,” Mrs. Kelly answered.

The room filled with easy laughter as she set it gently on the table with a soft, heavy thud.

“My mother carried this when she and your grandfather first got married,” she said, brushing her hand slowly across the scuffed leather. “Somewhere along the way, it stopped carrying clothes and started carrying memories.”

The youngest reached toward one of the clasps. “Can I?”

Mrs. Kelly smiled. “Go ahead.”

The first latch sprang open with a sharp, metallic click. The second one wouldn’t move.

“It’s stuck.”

“It always sticks,” Mrs. Kelly said. “Push down first… then lift.”

The old brass gave way with a firm pop. As the lid opened, the faint smell of cedar and old paper drifted across the table. For just a moment, no one said a word.

Then every hand moved at once.

Inside were hundreds of photographs. Some were bundled with faded ribbons. Others were tucked inside yellowing envelopes. Loose pictures had settled into the corners over the years, waiting patiently for someone to find them again.

“Can we touch them?”

Mrs. Kelly looked almost surprised by the question. “You have to,” she said softly. “Pictures aren’t much good if nobody looks at them.”

That was all the invitation they needed.

“Look — this one has a dog!”

“Who’s this guy?”

“Look at that truck!”

One of the older boys held up a black-and-white photograph. “Mom… is this Dad?”

Mrs. Kelly glanced at it and laughed. “No, that’s your Uncle Tommy.”

“No way.”

“It is.”

“He had *hair*?”

“He had a whole head of it.”

The table exploded. Another photograph made its way around.

“Who’s this lady?”

Mrs. Kelly leaned over. “Oh — that’s your Great Aunt Helen.”

“What happened to her?”

“She moved to Texas.”

“Why?”

“Because she married a cowboy.”

The children looked at one another. “No she didn’t.”

Mrs. Kelly smiled. “Well… he worked at a feed store. But that doesn’t sound nearly as interesting.”

The laughter started all over again.

Across the table, the visiting boy had grown quiet in a different way than before. Not uncertain now, just thoughtful. He turned over one photograph after another, studying the faces the way you study a language you don’t speak but somehow almost understand.

He set one down and looked up. “Were all these people family?”

Mrs. Kelly looked around the table, at the scattered photographs, the smiling faces, the children sitting elbow to elbow without even thinking about it.

“They still are,” she said.

The noise picked back up. More photographs circled the table. Someone found a picture of a car with enormous tail fins. Someone else found a woman in a hat so big it drew a long, appreciative silence before the laughter came.

Then the table grew quiet on its own.

A small hand had reached into the very bottom of the suitcase, beneath a stack of envelopes and old Christmas cards, and lifted out a photograph bent at one corner, its edges worn soft with age.

The little girl studied it for a moment, something in her face going still, before she slid it carefully across the worn wood.

“Mom…”

Mrs. Kelly reached for it.

“Who’s this?”

Mrs. Kelly took the small square of paper, but she didn’t answer right away. She turned it toward the light, her thumb resting against the creased corner, and looked at it the way you look at something you haven’t thought about in a long time but never really forgot.

“Well?” one of the boys asked.

A small smile crossed her face. “I was trying to remember where that was taken.”

“The old house?”

She shook her head.

“The farm?”

“No.”

One of the younger children leaned over the table, squinting at the gray-toned paper. “She’s barefoot.”

Mrs. Kelly laughed softly. “Most of us were.”

The little girl looked at the picture again. “She looks happy.”

Mrs. Kelly studied the photograph for another moment. “I think she was.”

“How old were you?”

“Oh… maybe seven.”

The visiting boy looked from the photograph to Mrs. Kelly, and then back again.

“That’s really you?”

She nodded.

“I don’t think you look very different.”

The whole table laughed, breaking the spell for a second.

“Oh, she looks different,” one of the boys argued.

The visiting boy shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“What do you mean?”

He pointed to the photograph, his finger hovering just above the face of the seven-year-old girl. “The eyes are the same.”

The room grew quiet.

One of the younger children broke the silence. “What were you thinking about?”

Mrs. Kelly smiled. “I don’t remember.”

“You had to be thinking about something.”

She studied the little girl in the frame. “I was probably trying to decide if I could climb that tree without getting caught.”

The children burst into laughter. “You climbed trees?”

“Oh, I climbed everything.”

“You don’t climb trees now.”

Mrs. Kelly started to answer, then stopped.

Finally, she smiled. “I suppose somewhere along the way, I forgot that I could.”

The little girl looked at the photograph one more time, then looked back at Mrs. Kelly.

“When did you stop being her?”

Mrs. Kelly looked down at the picture again. Her finger traced the worn edge slowly.

Then, almost to herself:

“I don’t think I ever did.”

For a moment, no one spoke.

The little girl reached over and touched the photograph with one finger. “I like her.”

Mrs. Kelly looked down at the child beside her. “So do I.”

The cards still lay scattered across the kitchen table, forgotten. No one seemed in any hurry to pick them up.

Years have a way of changing us.

Life teaches us what to fear, what to hide, and who we are supposed to become. Little by little, we begin to see ourselves through the eyes of the world, until one day we can hardly recognize the child we used to be.

Perhaps that is why our Lord said:

“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

**Matthew 18:3**

For many years, I thought He was asking us to become young again.

Now I wonder if He was asking something altogether different.

Maybe He was simply asking us to see ourselves the way He always has.

Not as the world measures us.

Not as age has changed us.

But as the child He first called by name.

The little girl in the photograph never doubted she belonged.

Maybe she knew something we forgot.

****

Author’s Note:
This story is an adaptation of a real memories.
