(Christmas Eve \u2014 The Birth of Jesus and the Shepherds)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prophets had spoken of this night, though none of them could have imagined its quietness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had spoken of a child<\/strong>\u2014not an idea, not a symbol, but a son born into the world.
A sign given not to dazzle, but to reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cBehold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.\u201d<\/em>
(Isaiah 7:14)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

They had spoken of Bethlehem<\/strong>, too\u2014small, unassuming, easily overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cBut you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel.\u201d<\/em>
(Micah 5:2)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And now history itself has bent to those ancient words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A decree has gone out.
A road has been traveled.
A city has filled beyond its capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Joseph and Mary enter Bethlehem, they move through it slowly. The streets are crowded with travelers who have returned for the census\u2014voices overlapping, animals tethered, lamps flickering against stone walls. The city is alive with movement and obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary bears the weight of life low and constant.
Joseph stays close, attentive, steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They seek a place to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is difficult. Every guest room is taken. The City of David strains beneath the weight of obedience\u2014to empire, to ancestry, to law. Joseph asks. Then asks again. Not with entitlement, but with resolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is finally offered to them is not a guest room prepared for comfort, but a place set apart\u2014quiet, sheltered, sufficient for the night. A place away from the noise, where animals are kept and the ordinary work of care happens unseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while they are there\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe time came for her to give birth.\u201d<\/strong>
(Luke 2:6)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Scripture does not linger on spectacle.
It does not dramatize the moment.
It speaks plainly, because holiness does not require excess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cShe gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger.\u201d<\/strong>
(Luke 2:7)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Mary brings Jesus<\/strong> into the world the way women always have\u2014
through strength and sweet surrender, joy comes into the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joseph is present. Faithful. Attentive.
Mary is resolute. Steady. At peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Child is named.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name given by the angel is spoken into the world for the first time.
God saves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isaiah had said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cFor to us a child is born, to us a son is given.\u201d<\/em>
(Isaiah 9:6)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And now the child is here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city does not stir. Doors remain closed. Bethlehem sleeps, unaware that the promise made to David has been fulfilled within its walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But heaven does not sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the city\u2014beyond crowded streets and stone houses\u2014shepherds keep watch over their flocks by night. They are men accustomed to vigilance, to guarding life in darkness, to listening while others rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cAn angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them.\u201d<\/strong>
(Luke 2:9)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Fear rises, because holiness always unsettles before it consoles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the angel speaks words already familiar in this story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo not be afraid.\u201d<\/strong>
(Luke 2:10)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Good news is announced.
Not to rulers.
Not to priests in the Temple.
Not to those with rooms secured in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to shepherds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.\u201d<\/strong>
(Luke 2:11)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A sign is given\u2014not power, not triumph, not display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.\u201d<\/strong>

And then heaven cannot remain restrained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The psalms had called for this moment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now heaven sings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shepherds go.
They find Jesus<\/strong>, exactly as they were told.
They see. They believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The long waiting ends not in spectacle, but in presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus\u2019 birth is the reason for the season.<\/strong>
He is the climax.
The turning point of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
