It was covenantal. Their marriage brought together what God had woven across centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marriage as Covenant: Erusin and Nissuin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jewish marriage wasn\u2019t a moment \u2014 it was a <strong>two-stage covenant process<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Erusin \u2014 The Binding Covenant<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erusin created a legal marriage, witnessed by the community.<br>From that moment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mary belonged to Joseph\u2019s household legally<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Joseph bore responsibility for her well-being<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Separation required a formal divorce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wasn\u2019t engagement.<br>This was covenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mishnah explains it plainly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cA woman is acquired through three means\u2026\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014 <em>Mishnah Kiddushin 1:1<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erusin was one of them \u2014 a sacred commitment made before God and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Nissuin \u2014 The Union of Households<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only later did the bride enter the groom\u2019s home fully. This could be weeks or months later, depending on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>family needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>preparation of living space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>financial arrangements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>community timing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why two stages?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because covenant was not rushed.<br>Two lives becoming one took intention, time, and preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Jewish teachers compared this process to God\u2019s covenant with Israel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The giving of the Law<\/strong> = erusin (God binding Himself to His people)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The coming of the Messiah<\/strong> = nissuin (the final union)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel saw themselves as a bride waiting for her Bridegroom to return and complete what had begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary and Joseph lived inside that imagery every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Life Inside a Covenant Household<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nazareth was not a private, individualistic culture like ours. Homes were full \u2014 grandparents, cousins, siblings, and extended kin. People shared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>meals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>prayer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>obligations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why Scripture often uses \u201cbrothers and sisters\u201d in a broad sense.<br>Hebrew <strong>ach<\/strong> and Greek <strong>adelphos<\/strong> frequently refer to <strong>extended family members<\/strong> or <strong>household relatives<\/strong>, not only biological siblings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLet there be no strife between <em>me and you<\/em>, for we are brothers.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014 <em>Genesis 13:8<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Abraham and Lot weren\u2019t brothers \u2014 Lot was his nephew.<br>The language reflected family closeness, not biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary entering Joseph\u2019s household during the erusin period would not have been unusual. It was considered honorable and protective, especially if her parents were elderly or no longer living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Waiting Was a Righteous Act<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient Israel understood something we often forget today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Waiting was not passivity \u2014 it was obedience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important choices \u2014 family, covenant, honor, future obligations \u2014 were approached with stillness, reflection, and prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their ancestors had been guided in quiet moments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Joseph son of Jacob<\/strong> received divine direction in dreams (<em>Genesis 37;
